Goodbye MSN (Live) Messenger!

Since work is removing MSN messenger, and I rarely speak to more that 1 or two friends on it, I’m ditching it and moving to Jabber.

The nice thing about Jabber is that it’s an open system, so I can see the same contacts in iChat and Googletalk, and Googletalk works within it’s own application or the browser.

The best thing was clearing out my MSN contacts, I had hundreds of people there that I never speak to, so I pared it down to about 5 people, and linked them up via a Jabber server so that they can still see me.

At first I was afraid, I was petrified - but then I remembered that the same thing happened 5 years ago with ICQ. ICQ became so bloated and messy that it wasn’t worth using anymore.

And the nice thing is that I changed my MSN/Live messenger login to be the same email address as my Google Talk email.

Next I used Psi to link my Google Talk Jabber account to an MSN service, so I can get MSN contacts in iChat, or Google Talk.

Thank you so much for promoting Jabber. The best and most secure IM protocol around.

It’s a pleasure - an open service makes more sense than a closed one.

    Right, it gets better.

Now I’m using Jabber I can been online via iChat. My MSN contacts such as they are can still converse with me (but I deleted about a hundred of them. I deleted more than I should have).

I can also chat online via Googletalk since it’s Jabber, either via the Googletalk app (not tried it yet though) or the online Googletalk Widget, or via Gmail.

Now, Twitter supports updates via Instant Messenger using Jabber, and Facebook supports Twitter updates…so I can type a message in iChat (or presumably Gtalk) and it updates Twitter and lets Facebook know too.

Thoughts on this?
